This tool provides an intuitive platform for practicing Mandarin tones, addressing one of the most complex aspects of Chinese pronunciation. By listening to sample tonal syllables, practicing their reproduction, and observing real-time pitch shape visualizations, users can compare their pitch contours directly against native examples. This immediate visual feedback facilitates faster correction and refinement of tone production, contributing to a reduction in non-native accent and misunderstanding caused by tonal inaccuracies.

The app encompasses a comprehensive database of Mandarin syllables with lexical tones, including 407 base syllables and 1259 tonal variations. Each syllable is accompanied by native sample sounds, assisting learners in familiarizing themselves with accurate pronunciation patterns and pitch contours. Through consistent practice with these samples, users can systematically improve their tonal competence.

The lite version of ToneDetector offers basic features such as detection of sample tone contours, coverage of 56 base syllables and 185 tonal syllables, and an assessment module using five randomly selected syllables to evaluate tone perception capabilities.

The full version expands upon these features by enabling the detection of both native sample contours and user-produced contours across all Mandarin syllables with lexical tones—covering the entire spectrum of 407 base syllables and 1259 tonal variations. It allows users to select syllables randomly or via typed input and provides more extensive assessments with twenty randomly chosen syllables to better gauge tone recognition skills.
